Many of you must have thought that an abbreviation and an acronym are one and the same. No, they are not. An abbreviation is different from an acronym, however both are used to create short forms for lengthy phrase to keep it simple and easy to remember.
An acronym is formed usually by using first letters to form a single word. An abbreviation is formed by the same process but it doesn’t form a word, it makes us to just spell out the letters for e.g ICICI is an abbreviation whereas PAN (which sound like a word) is an acronym.
There are many abbreviations and acronym we use in our day to day life. Some of them are used so frequently that most of us don’t know that those words are actually an acronym or abbreviation. So, here are some initialism we use everyday without knowing their full forms.
Around 6000 new viruses are created every month. Amazon.com was the most exploited target for phishing attacks, followed by Apple and eBay. The most expensive computer virus was MyDoom which caused $38 billion of damages.
